Rood & Rood-Wit
Rood en wit zijn de kleuren die je vaak met Kerstmis ziet. Maar deze 2e Kerstdag zag ik de kleuren rood en rood-wit tijdens een fotosessie met vier prachtige Ierse setters.
De Ierse Setter is één van Ierlands negen inheemse werkhondenrassen en vormt een belangrijk deel van het Ierse natuurlijke en sportieve erfgoed. Jagen, en zeker het houden en fokken van goede jachthonden was in een ver verleden weggelegd voor de upper-ten en geestelijken. Door de destijds geïsoleerde ligging heeft Ierland vele rassen in zowel gebruikshonden, paarden en rundvee voortgebracht. Allemaal met hoge gebruikswaarde en opvallend: vrijwel allen rood/roodbruin als hoofdkleur! Dit waren normaliter de dieren voor het algemene nut en kwamen daarom juist in bezit van boeren, burgers en buitenlui. Vrijwel iedereen jaagde. Geen wonder dat de Ierse setter, al sinds de 18e eeuw, zo’n hoge gebruikswaarde werd toegekend en daarbij tevens duidelijk identificeerbaar in type was. Ierse setters waren geharde klimaat bestendige honden; toonden veel zelfstandigheid en stonden goed onder appèl.
Er zijn (helaas) een relatief klein aantal werklijnfamilies bij zowel de Rood-Witte als egaal Rode Ierse setters overgebleven, het merendeel van de huidige Ierse Setter valt onder de showlijnfamilie, welke zich onder meer kenmerkt door een iets grotere bouw en meer beharing. Om de genenpool in de met name rood-witte werklijn te vergroten en zodoende uitsterven te voorkomen, heeft men internationaal een outcross programma opgesteld: het kruisen van een Ierse Rode Setter met een Ierse Rood-Witte Setter, beiden uit werklijnfamilies.
Op de eerste foto zie je links 2 Ierse Rood-Witte Setters, beide uit werklijnen en waarmee veldwerk gedaan wordt. Rechts 2 Ierse Rode Setters uit showlijn, waarmee jachtwerk beoefend wordt.
